Two Cases And A Borrowed Room

This message is for mercy for a ruin he had a hand in, eight weeks after coming home with two cases that are still not unpacked, sitting on the end of a bed in a back room with an expired staff card in his hand

The cases are still by the wardrobe, and one of them still has the tag on the handle from the flight.

He has taken things out of them for eight weeks, one at a time, as he has needed them, and he has never once unpacked either case properly, because unpacking would be an afternoon, and an afternoon would mean something.

This is his sister's back room. A single bed with a good mattress on it, a wardrobe with her winter coats at one end, and a radiator that comes on at half five and wakes him. She has been kind past what anybody could ask. She has not once put a question to him that he could not answer, and he has heard her downstairs on the phone telling somebody he is doing fine, in the tone people use when they are protecting you.

Nineteen years he was out there. A flat with a balcony you could get two chairs on. A job where people rang him by name. A language he learned properly, the kind you dream in eventually, and here that language is worth nothing at all. There is nobody within thirty miles who would need it. He is fifty-three, and the most useful thing about him for two decades is now a party trick.

He can trace how it came apart. He can trace it in a straight line, and some of the line is other people and weather and things nobody could have held, and some of the line is him, and he knows exactly which parts and could put them in order if anybody asked. Nobody asks. That is somehow worse.

This afternoon he is sitting on the end of the bed with his staff card in his hand, the plastic one on the blue lanyard, with his photograph on it from when he still had the beard. It should have gone in a bin at the airport. It did not.

His nephew came up earlier with a cup of tea, stood in the doorway, and said kindly that everything works out, and that God has a plan, and that he must not beat himself up. Then he went back down to his game. He is nineteen and he meant every word of it.

Maybe that is where you are, on the end of a bed in a room that belongs to somebody who loves you. And the sentence you cannot get past is not what anybody else did. It is the part that was yours.

Two Cases And A Borrowed Room

First, the word over the door

Before I offer you anything, I will say what the word on this site means, because it is the sort of word that does quiet damage when it is left vague.

Abundance is never a sum. It is fullness of life, and that is the whole of it. Not the flat with the balcony back, not the job, not a fresh start in a third country with better weather. Fullness of life, handed to a person, in whatever room that person is sitting in. If you arrived at a page with this name half hoping the word meant something you could take to a bank, I understand that, and I am not going to be superior about it.

You have that fullness this afternoon, at fifty-three, on the end of a borrowed bed, and it is not a reward for the nineteen years. It is John 10:10, where the Shepherd names life as the thing He came to give, and the Holy Spirit gets a sentence like that up a staircase and into a back room.

The part that was yours

I am not going to itemize it. I want to say that early, because bracing for it is what a person does from the first paragraph of a page like this one.

I do not know which parts of that straight line were yours, I am not going to guess, and if I guessed I would guess wrong. A stranger sorting somebody's last nineteen years into columns is not mercy. It is bookkeeping in a warm voice.

I am also not going to tell you that none of it was yours. You know what you know. Somebody who tells a man in his fifties that he had no hand in it at all is not comforting him, they are telling him his own memory is unreliable, and that is a lonelier place than being at fault.

So here is the third thing, which is the actual thing. Mercy does not require the audit first. It never has. The clearest sentence in the Bible about how God moved toward people puts the timing right out in the open: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Not after the accounting. Not once the parts had been separated out and assigned. While.

You are loved in the wreckage you helped to make, and that is not a soft reading of the text, it is Romans 5 said as plainly as it can be said, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a sentence like that past the place where a man keeps his own list.

Kindness that is not conditional on how it started

There is a version of God a great many people carry without ever deciding to, in which He helps the ones who were unlucky and is a little cooler toward the ones who were careless.

That God does not exist. There is no second tier and there is no colder office further down the corridor. The father in the story about the son who spent everything did not wait to hear the speech, and he had every right to hear it, and he ran while the boy was a long way off and still working out his wording. The speech got interrupted. That detail is in there on purpose.

You have not been placed in a lower category by any of it, and there is no other version of God waiting behind this one to deal with you properly. It is written into how He describes Himself, slow to anger and abounding in mercy, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land on a man holding an expired staff card rather than leaving it a doctrine.

What eight weeks is

I want to stay in the back room a while, because this is exactly where people hurry.

Eight weeks is when the arrival is over. In the first week there were people at the door, and somebody made up the bed, and there was a strange grim energy to it. By eight weeks everybody has gone back to their own lives, which is right, and the radiator still comes on at half five, and the cases are still by the wardrobe with the tags on.

I am not going to tell you it happened in order to teach anybody something. I am not going to tell you a better country is being prepared, or that a man's fifties are the ideal time to begin again, or any of the other sentences people say to fill a silence. I do not know what is ahead of you, and nobody who tells you they do is telling you the truth.

You were met at the door already, before the speech and before the sorting, and I am not saying it to make the afternoon easier. It is what is written about a Father who ran, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up the stairs to a room with two cases in it.

The breakthrough

Nothing has to be sorted out before this next part, and no part of it has to be explained to me or to anybody else.

You are loved right now, in that room, with the cases by the wardrobe and the list you keep between two and four in the morning, and His kindness toward you today is not calculated from how any of it started. That is not my leniency. Romans 5 puts the timing out in the open, while we were still sinners, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it past the defenses a man builds after eight weeks of being handled gently.

So say the one part that was yours out loud, plainly, without dressing it and without adding the reasons. Then hand it over in a single sentence.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your mouth. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and nothing in the last nineteen years altered where a person is seated. What He does with the room, the cases and the months ahead is His to decide, and however He answers, these three lines are true tonight. They rest on what is written in Romans 5 rather than on how convincing I have been, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them up the stairs.

  1. Two cases by the wardrobe, you are luggage with the tags still on and you are not the summary of a life. What is written is that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us, and the timing in that sentence settles what my coming back here means. In the name of Jesus I take my hand off the handle and stop reading you as a verdict.
  2. Verdict that I am the reason for all of it, you are dismissed from the end of this bed, and you do not get to speak first any more. Scripture says God does not deal with us according to our sins, and He wrote that already knowing every part of the line that was mine. I am loved in the wreckage I helped to make, and I am handing my part of it over in one sentence today.
  3. Father, You ran while the speech was still being rehearsed and You did not wait to hear the wording of it. You know the back room and the staff card in my hand, and Your Spirit has not once treated me as a case to be reviewed. Keep me in that mercy in the name of Jesus, and I am saying my part out loud and giving it to You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
