He parks at the far end by the trolley bay now, and he has worked out that four o'clock is the quiet hour.
The van is the problem. He took the sign writing off himself one night in March with a hairdryer and a plastic scraper, and it took him five hours and most of the skin off two knuckles, and he did a decent job of it. The trouble is what was underneath. Seven years of weather on the panel around the letters and none on the letters themselves, so the paint where his name used to be is a shade newer than the paint around it, and in a low sun, which is what four o'clock is at this time of year, you can still read it perfectly.
His own name. Slightly cleaner than the rest of the van.
Seven months. The work stopped inside a fortnight, which he expected. The phone stopping was different. It did not ring for eleven days in a row in the summer and he checked twice that it was working, and it was.
He sees a man he has known since school come out through the automatic doors with a trolley. He watches him clock the van, and he watches the small correction in the man's walk, the sort of thing nobody notices unless they have become an expert in it, and the man goes up the next row instead. And he understands it completely. If it had gone the other way he might have done the same. That is the part that takes the legs off him, that he understands.
Somebody sent him a card in the second month with a verse on it about beauty for ashes, and he has never been able to make himself throw it away, and he has never been able to look at it either. It is in the glovebox six inches from his knee.
He sits until the car park lights come on. That is the routine now. Sit until the lights, then go in, get what is on the list, come out.
Maybe that is where you are. Maybe you can trace the whole thing back to a stretch of months that had your fingerprints somewhere on them, and you have stopped saying so out loud because you learned that everybody either wants the full account or wants to tell you it was nothing. And you cannot face either one of those again.

What I am not going to do
I am not going to ask you what it was.
I do not need the account. I am not going to sit you down and walk through the timeline of it, and I am not going to lift it off you either by telling you it was nothing, because you know whether it was nothing, and a man who is told a true thing is not is left more alone than he was before. Mercy that requires a full statement first is not mercy, it is a process. And an absolution nobody asked for is a way of not looking at somebody.
So neither. Both of those hands are staying in my pockets, and the whole of what is on this page is mercy.
You have already been met without a statement being taken, and that is not a policy of mine. It is what Romans 5 says God did with His timing, and the Holy Spirit gets a sentence like that to a man who has spent seven months explaining himself inside his own head.
And the word, before it gets used on you again
Abundance is not your name given back to you. It is not the phone starting again, it is not the man in the car park coming over, and it is not money, and I am not going to let the word sit vague and hopeful while you read a page written by somebody who wants something from you.
Abundance means fullness of life. That is the whole definition.
I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.John 10:10
You have that, seven months in, in a van at the far end of a car park, and the state of your reputation in one town has changed nothing about the offer. It is written in John 10 in the Shepherd's own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who gets a line like that past the part of a man that has stopped expecting anything good with his name on it.
Where God stood
Here is what the written word says about the timing of God's kindness, and the timing is the whole thing.
God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 5:8
Read when. Not after. Not once the account had been given and the record straightened out and the town satisfied. While. The love went out into a situation that had not been cleared up, toward people who had not explained themselves, and the New Testament is completely unembarrassed about saying so.
You were loved on the worst afternoon of that year. Not tolerated, not put on a list to deal with later: loved, at four o'clock, in the hour you would least like described. That is not me being generous with you. That is Romans 5 saying what God did with His timing, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a sentence like that land in a man who has spent seven months being an expert in how people walk.
Seven months is a particular distance too. Seven months is when the loud part is over and the quiet part has settled in for the long haul. It is when people have stopped talking about it, which sounds like relief and is not, because what it means is that it has stopped being news and started being simply what is known about you. It is the card in the glovebox you cannot throw out and cannot read.
And you have not been written off. There is no register in heaven where a man's name goes when a town's version of him has settled, and Scripture is short of examples of God working exclusively with people whose accounts came out clean, and the Spirit was never given on the strength of a reference.
Mercy is not a verdict on the facts
This is where people get lost, so let me say it slowly.
Mercy does not require the facts to be different from what they are. That is exactly what makes it mercy. It is not a finding revised on appeal. It is kindness that got there before the finding did, and stayed. If the facts had to be adjusted first it would be a finding, and findings are what this town has already produced, and a finding is not what is being offered here.
You are loved in the wreckage, including whatever part of it has your hands on it, and God is not holding it over your head while He decides how to treat you today. His kindness is not conditional on how this started. That is the plain claim of Romans 5, and the Spirit who carries it does not carry a copy of the file with it.
Something can be received in this van, at four o'clock, without one thing being cleared up first.
You are loved right now, with the account unsettled and the town's version standing and the lettering still showing in the light, and none of that is being weighed before He decides how to treat you. Romans 5 says the love went out while nothing was sorted, and His Spirit is the one who gets that past a man's own conviction about himself.
So say the one part out loud that was actually yours. Not the whole account. Nobody is taking a statement. Say it plainly, without decorating it and without excusing it, and then hand it over in one sentence, because a thing said out loud in front of God stops being a stone in a man's chest and becomes a thing that has been dealt with by somebody who already knew.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at four o'clock, with the lights not on yet. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and no town's verdict alters where a person is seated. What happens with your name and the months ahead is His to decide, and however He answers, these three are true this afternoon. They rest on what is written in Romans 5 rather than on any opinion I could offer you, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them past what you believe about yourself.
- Lettering still showing under the paint, you are an old name in a low sun and you are not the account God is working from, and I am not reading you as one. Scripture says that while we were still sinners Christ died for us, and the word while is doing all the work in that sentence. In the name of Jesus I take my hands off the wheel and receive what was given before anything was cleared up.
- Verdict the town wrote on me, you are not the register God keeps and you do not get to sit in the passenger seat any longer. Mercy has never once required the facts to be different from what they are, which is the whole reason it is mercy and not a finding. I am loved in the wreckage this afternoon, with my hands where they actually were.
- Jesus, You loved me on the worst afternoon of that year and You did not wait for the account to come out straight, and Your Spirit has not brought the file into this van with Him. You know the part that was mine and You knew it before anybody in this town did. Take it from me here in the car park, and I am saying it out loud to You instead of carrying it up and down these rows.
