She pulls into the layby because the layby is opposite the gate, and she does not admit to herself that this is why.
Sunday, coming back from church, about quarter past twelve. She switches the engine off. Across the road there is the field gate her grandfather hung, and you can still see where he set the post deeper on the low side because the ground moves there. Somebody has put a new chain on it. The chain is the thing she cannot get past.
Five weeks. The sheep went on a Tuesday morning in one go, and it took less time than anybody expects it to take, and the yard was quiet by eleven in a way she has no words for. She stood in the middle of it afterwards with the yard brush in her hand and did not sweep anything.
Three generations in that ground. Her grandfather, her father, her. The wet corner they never did get right. The lambing shed with the marks on the wall where the light switch was moved twice. There is somebody else's name on it now and that person is perfectly decent and she cannot make herself say his name out loud.
In church this morning they sang one she has sung her whole life. She stood up. She held the book. Her mouth opened and nothing came out at all, not one word of it, and she stood there with her lips slightly apart looking at the words like they were in another language. The woman next to her put a hand on her back at the end, which was kind, and she wanted very much to be somewhere else.
The radio is on low in the car now and it is a hymn, of course it is, and she reaches over and turns it off rather than let it be a test she fails twice in one morning.
Five weeks is a peculiar distance. The people who rang every day for a fortnight have got on with their harvest, and they were good about it, and they had to. Nobody is unkind. It is just that everybody has gone back inside their own lives and she is sat in a layby at quarter past twelve looking at a chain.
Maybe that is roughly where you are. Somebody gave you the beautiful line about the garment of praise, and you could not put it on, and you have started to wonder what is wrong with you.

The word, plainly
Abundance is never a valuation and it is not acres, and it is certainly not money. In the sentence it comes from it means fullness of life, which is what the Shepherd said in John 10 when He said He came so that His own would have life and have it to the full.
That is the definition and it is the only one this site will offer you. If you arrived at a domain with this name half expecting something practical, I am not going to be clever about that. Nobody standing in a ruin reaches for the sophisticated thing first.
You have the whole of that verse this morning, in a layby, with the engine off and nothing sung. It is written in John 10 as the Shepherd’s own purpose rather than as a reward for a good Sunday, and the Holy Spirit carries it to a woman who could not open her mouth in church two hours ago.
Now, the garment of praise, the phrase somebody handed you that would not go on.
It is given, and it is never demanded
Isaiah 61 says the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Look at what kind of word garment is. It is a thing somebody puts on you. It is not a standard you meet, it is not a performance you deliver on a Sunday morning with the book open, and it is not withheld from people who are too heavy to sing.
Nowhere in that verse, or anywhere near it, does God ask the mourner to produce a feeling first. The heaviness is named in the same breath as the garment. He is not pretending it is not there. He mentions it Himself.
You are not disqualified from worship by a mouth that would not open this morning. That is not me being generous with you, it is written into the same verse that names the heaviness out loud, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts a garment on a person rather than handing them a list of what to feel.
What honest praise is actually made of
Here is the psalm I want in your hands, because it is the one for a layby. Psalm 62 says to pour out your heart before Him, and it says God is a refuge for us, and it does not say to arrange your heart nicely before pouring it.
Praise is not the same as being cheerful about your situation. It never was. Half the psalms are furious or exhausted and they are still psalms, still praise, still in the book, and nobody has ever taken them out for being too heavy.
So the question is not how do I feel enough to sing. The question is what is true, and can I say that. Because whatever is true about God is true this morning in a layby, whether or not you can feel a single degree of it, and a true sentence is worth more in His hearing than a full-throated one that you do not mean.
You have permission to say something short. Four words is a sentence. God is good is a sentence, and if you cannot get that one out yet, then You are still here is a sentence, and Scripture never once measures praise by its length, and His Spirit is the one who carries a four word offering just as far as a hymn with five verses.
And nobody is asking you to be grateful for it
Let me be very plain here, because this is where people get hurt.
You are not being asked to thank God for the loss of that ground. Not now, not later, and not as a spiritual achievement to work up to. Isaiah 61 puts the garment on the mourner without once asking the mourner to approve of the mourning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the dressing rather than a woman who has to feel differently first. I will not tell you the collapse was arranged, or that a reason exists which somebody could write out for you, or that a further-along version of you is glad about the chain on that gate.
Heaviness is not unbelief. It is what the verse itself calls the condition of the person receiving, and a woman standing in church unable to sing is not failing anything, she is grieving in a building.
You were loved at eleven o'clock on the Tuesday morning the yard went quiet, at that exact hour, and not one degree less than you are loved in the layby. That is what the word of God means when it says He is near to the brokenhearted, and the Holy Spirit makes a sentence like that reach a woman with a yard brush in her hand.
Something can be received in that layby, this morning, with the engine off and the radio turned down.
You are not required to produce anything here. Isaiah 61 hands the garment to the person who is heavy, in the same sentence that says they are heavy, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the dressing rather than standing back waiting for a better performance out of you.
Nothing about this asks you to feel first. There is no minimum here, no volume He is listening for, and no version of this where the woman who could not open her mouth this morning is further from Him than the woman in the row behind who could.
So say one true thing to God, out loud, in the car. Make it as short as it has to be to stay honest. A thing said with the mouth stops being a private wrestle and becomes ground under your feet, and God's people have always found their footing by saying out loud what is actually true rather than what sounded best.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the ground going did not move a person out of that seat. What happens with the field, the chain and the months in front of you is His to decide, and however He answers over any of it, these three are true this morning. They rest on what is written in Isaiah 61 and Psalm 62 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them across the road to a gate.
- New chain on my grandfather post, you are somebody else lawful business now and you are not the measure of my worship. Scripture hands the garment of praise to the person who is heavy, in the same breath that calls them heavy, and it never once asked for a feeling first. In the name of Jesus I say one true thing out loud in this layby and I mean every word of it.
- Thought that God wants a better voice, you are dismissed from this car and you do not get to run my Sundays. Psalm 62 says pour out the heart before Him and it does not say arrange it first, and half the psalms are heavier than I am today. Honest and short is what I have got, and honest and short is received.
- Shepherd, You are near to the brokenhearted and You were in that yard at eleven on the Tuesday morning it went quiet. You know the wet corner and the marks on the shed wall, and You have never once asked me to be glad about the chain. Take what is true out of my mouth this morning, and I am saying it to You with the engine off.
