He is standing up because everybody else stood up.
Third song. It is the one with the long build in it, and the room likes it, and the woman in front of him has her hands out and her eyes shut and she means every word, and he has no argument with her at all.
His mouth will not do it.
He tries the first line. He gets about four words in and the rest of it will not come, because to sing the rest of it he would have to be a man who currently thinks it, and he is not, and he cannot make his face into the face of somebody who does.
Eight weeks ago there was a room with a table in it and a jug of water nobody drank and three people on the other side, and it went the way it went, and at the end of it twenty two years of registration stopped existing. There was a letter afterwards confirming it. The letter was polite.
He is not going to argue with the finding. That is the thing he cannot say in this room. People here have been kind, and their kindness has a shape to it, and the shape assumes he was hard done by. He has let them think it, mostly by not correcting them, and that sits in him like a stone.
The certificate is face down on top of the wardrobe. He put it up there himself in a bin bag with the frame still on. He knows the number by heart. Twenty two years of writing it on things does that. He caught himself last week starting to write it on a form for the garage.
Eight weeks. The phone stopped after about three. Two people from work were very good early on and are now people who look genuinely pleased to see him and then run out of things to say. His wife has been steady, which is more than he thinks he has coming.
And now he is standing in the third song with his mouth shut, and the man next to him has just glanced over, and he has done the thing where you move your lips slightly.
That is what he cannot stand. Not the room. Not the song. The lip movement.
Maybe that is roughly where you are. Standing up because everybody stood up, wanting to worship and finding that the only sentences available are ones you would have to pretend to mean.

What the word means before anything is asked of you
Let me get the word over this page settled first, because eight weeks of people meaning well leaves a man able to hear a sales angle at forty paces.
Abundance is not money and it is not a full voice. It is not the registration back, not the room reconvened, not a Sunday where the words come easily again. It means fullness of life, and that is the whole of it, and nothing on this site will ever quietly mean anything else by it.
I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.John 10:10
The noun is life. Abundantly is not a second item; it says how much life. And a man standing in the third song with his mouth shut is inside that sentence exactly as he is, with the certificate face down on the wardrobe and nothing about it altered.
You have that fullness on a Sunday when four words is your entire vocabulary, and that is not encouragement talking. It is what is written in John 10 and it was spoken by a Shepherd about His own, and the Holy Spirit carries it into a man who is currently moving his lips slightly and hating himself for it.
The garment is given, and nobody demands it off you
Here is the verse this whole category stands on, and I want to read the grammar of it rather than the atmosphere of it.
To give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.Isaiah 61:3
To give. It is a giving. A garment is put on somebody, and the somebody in that sentence is a person in the spirit of heaviness at the moment the garment arrives. Isaiah does not say the heaviness had to lift first. He does not say the garment is a reward for having already brightened up. The heaviness is the condition the person is in when they are dressed.
So nobody here is going to demand praise off you, and nobody here reads your heaviness as unbelief. That reading has done an enormous amount of damage in rooms exactly like that one, and it is not in the text.
You are dressed by Him and not by your own performance, and that is written into Isaiah 61 itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts the garment on rather than standing at the door checking whether you deserved it.
Four words, if four words is what is true
Now the practical thing, and it is smaller than you expect.
David wrote a psalm in the worst week of his life, one where he was not the wronged party and knew it, and he did not open his mouth to sing about how well things were going.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Psalm 51:17
Read what is on the altar. A broken spirit. That is the offering, and it is named a sacrifice, which means it counts as worship in the strictest sense of the word. Not the tidied version. Not the four words with the confident face bolted on. The actual state of the man.
So the way through the third song is not to sing louder. It is to say something shorter and entirely true. God, I am still standing up. That is five words and it is worship. God, I have nothing today. God, I am not going anywhere. If a sentence has one true word in it and stops there, it is worship, and if it runs to twelve words and two of them had to be acted, it is not.
You have been received today exactly as you are, and I am not making that up to be kind to a man in a hall. Psalm 51 says the broken spirit is the sacrifice God does not despise, and His Spirit is the one who carries an unfinished sentence up rather than requiring it to be finished first.
And I want to say the other half of that plainly. Nothing on this page asks you for gratitude about the hearing. Not for the room, not for the table, not for the letter, not for a single one of the eight weeks. Nobody who loves you would ask that of you, and God has not asked it either, and if a quiet sense has been growing that He is waiting for it, that weight was never issued from His side.
You are not required to have a feeling before you open your mouth. Scripture puts a contrite heart on the altar rather than an inspired one, and the Holy Spirit is not grading the delivery, and there has never been a minimum length.
Something can be received right here, in the third song, with your mouth shut and the man next to you glancing over.
You are received as you actually are this morning, and that is not a lowered standard. Psalm 51 puts a broken spirit on the altar and calls it the sacrifice God does not despise, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying a four word sentence up rather than the one auditing its length, and nothing about the last eight weeks has changed the terms.
Nothing is being asked of you here. Not a feeling, not a better face, not gratitude for the room with the table in it, not the version of the song you cannot honestly reach. There is no minimum. There is no lip movement required, and there never was.
So open your mouth and say the short true thing. Four words is enough. Two is enough. A sentence a person actually means stops being something endured and becomes worship, which is what it was going to be the moment it was true.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and a hearing in a room with a table in it has not moved a person from where Scripture seats them. What He does with the registration and the months ahead is His to decide, and however He answers over any of it, these three are true this morning. They rest on what is written in Psalm 51 and Isaiah 61, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them out of a mouth that will only manage a few words.
- Certificate face down on the wardrobe, you are card and glass in a bin bag, and you do not get to decide whether I can worship this morning. Isaiah says the garment of praise is given to people in the spirit of heaviness, and given is the word the sentence turns on. In the name of Jesus I leave you where you are and I open my mouth on what is true.
- Fear that I am only pretending in here, you do not get the front of this song, and you do not get to close my mouth for me. What is written is that a broken spirit is the sacrifice God does not despise, and He put no minimum length on it. The Holy Spirit is carrying four honest words higher than twelve performed ones, and I am saying my four now.
- God, You do not despise a broken and a contrite heart, and You said so plainly and You asked nobody to brighten up first. You know the room with the table in it and You know the number I still write by accident, and You have not asked me to be grateful for any of it. Receive what is actually true from me today, and I am saying it out loud where I am standing.
Psalm 51:17
