The keys are on the same ring as the van keys, so he holds them every day.
Three of them. The outer door of the hall, the cupboard where the chairs were kept, and a little brass one for the meter box that he was given in the first week and never used once. They have been on that ring for two years and nobody has ever asked for them back. That is the part he cannot get past. Not the letters, not the meeting, not the Sunday it stopped. Nobody asked for the keys.
He is in the van outside the builders' merchant with the engine off, because he got here twenty minutes early and there is nowhere else to be at half nine on a Thursday.
Two years. Long enough that people have stopped saying they are praying for him, which they did for about four months. Long enough that the plant is not a live subject any more, it is a thing that happened. When his name comes up somewhere it comes up gently, the way people are gentle about a death.
He lost the work, the church and the friends in the same week. That is what nobody who has not had it done to them quite understands. It is not one loss with side effects. The people he prayed with on a Tuesday were the people he worked for and the people he ate with on a Sunday and the people whose children knew his name, and all three doors closed on the same afternoon, and there was nowhere left to take the grief of losing them, because the place he would have taken it was them.
And he can trace it. That is the other thing. He can sit in a van and go through the decisions in order, the ones that were his, and there are some that were his. He is not confused about that.
He saw a woman from the old congregation at the tip a fortnight ago. They talked about her boiler for four minutes and neither of them said the word church, and afterwards he sat in the van for a while, and then he drove home.
Maybe that is where you are. Able to name your own part in it, two years on, and quietly certain that God is waiting for a full account of it before anything warm happens.

What the word on this sign actually means
Before anything else I want to deal with the word over the door of this site, because a man in a van does not need a second thing done to him today.
Abundance here is never money. In John 10 the Shepherd says He came so that His own would have life and have it to the full, and the whole weight of that sentence sits on the word life. Not holdings. Not a hall bigger than the one that closed. Fullness of life, which is a thing a person can be handed in a van outside a builders' merchant with the engine off.
You have that, and it did not go when the hall went. It is written in John 10 by the One who owns the flock rather than by anybody who ran the plant, and the Holy Spirit carries a line like that into a man who has quietly assumed he forfeited it.
Saying so does not fill a diary or bring the Sundays back, and I am not going to pretend otherwise on my way to the next paragraph.
Mercy is not the end of an investigation
Here is the thing that keeps a person in a van for twenty minutes. Not the shame of it exactly. The arithmetic of it. Somewhere along the way most of us picked up the idea that the kindness of God is the last stage of a process, and that the earlier stages are ours: full disclosure, correct remorse, an accounting of who did what and in what proportion, and then, at the end of all that, the warmth.
That is not how the book reads. In Lamentations, which is a poem written by a man sitting in the actual rubble of an actual city, the line arrives in the middle of the worst chapter and it has no condition attached to it. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness. There is no audit in that verse and no ledger in it. It is a sunrise, and a sunrise does not check the room before it comes in.
You have been dealt with in mercy already, and not on the basis of a full account. Lamentations 3 says His mercies are new every morning and puts no condition after the comma, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a written mercy land on the part of a man he has never said out loud to anybody.
I am not going to itemize your part in it. That would be the easiest paragraph in this article to write, it is not mine to write, and God has not sent me to hold anything over you on His behalf. I am also not going to tell you the part that was yours was somebody else's. You know what it was. Mercy is not the same thing as being told you did nothing.
You are loved inside the wreckage you had a hand in, and that is the harder sentence and it is the one Scripture actually makes. Romans 5 puts the love of God in place while people were still in the wrong, not after the correction, and the Holy Spirit is given as the one who pours that love into a person rather than reading it out to them from a distance.
Two years, and the keys still on the ring
There is a particular tiredness at two years that six weeks does not have. At six weeks a thing is a crisis, and people show up for a crisis. At two years it is simply the shape of a life, and the last of the people who used to ask have stopped asking, not unkindly, because there is nothing new to ask about.
You were not written off in that quiet. The word says His compassions do not fail and that they are new every morning, and morning is a thing that keeps arriving whether or not anybody phones, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept coming into a van with a set of keys in it for two years running.
About the keys. I do not think you need to post them. I think the reason nobody asked for them is far more ordinary and far less about you than it has become in your head, and that ring has turned into a small daily court where a verdict gets read out every time the engine starts.
You have been let out of that court, and it is not my sentence to pass. Micah 7 says He delights in mercy, and treads our sins underfoot, and casts them into the depths of the sea, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and closes a private hearing that has been running in a man's chest for two years.
Something can be received in the van, with the keys still on the ring and nothing at all settled.
You are not standing in a queue behind your own explanation. Lamentations puts the mercy of God in the middle of a ruined city with no preconditions written after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a man's chest rather than true on a page he read once.
So say it out loud. The part that was yours, named plainly, without the sentence that softens it and without the sentence that damns you for it. Then hand it over in one line and stop. Saying a thing with the mouth takes it out of the private court and puts it in the hands of the One who has already dealt with it, and God's people have always found their footing by opening their mouths on what He has already said.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your mouth. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and nothing that came apart two years ago changes where a person is seated. What happens with the hall, the friendships and the years ahead is His to decide, and however He answers any of it, these three are true today. They rest on what is written in Lamentations 3 rather than on anything I could persuade you of, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them past the part you have never said out loud.
- Three keys on the ring, you are a set of keys and you are not a sentence being served, and I am taking you off the ring today. Scripture says His mercies are new every morning and it does not put a hearing in front of the mercy. In the name of Jesus I stop reading a verdict off a keyring.
- Thought that my name is finished in this, you are dismissed, and you do not get the front of my mornings any longer. The word says His compassions do not fail and that they are new every morning, and a morning is not issued on the strength of a record. Mercy has already reached the part I have never said out loud, and I am getting out of the van and going in.
- Father, Your mercies are new every morning and You wrote that down in the middle of a ruined city rather than a comfortable one. You know the three keys, and You know the week when the work and the church and the friends all went together. Take the part that was mine, in the name of Jesus, and I am handing it to You out loud this morning instead of holding my own hearing.
