He stands in the back row on the left, near the fire door, and he has stood there for four years.
The second song is the one with the big chorus. Everybody knows it. The words come up on the screen and the room lifts, and he opens his mouth and nothing comes out that he can honestly send anywhere. So he does what he has done for four years, which is stand respectfully with his hands at his sides and wait for it to finish.
Four years. That is the strange part, and nobody prepares a man for it. To everybody else it is old news, a thing that happened, filed. To him it is Tuesday. It is every trade counter in the county. It is a man he worked beside for nine years seeing him near the recycling bins at the supermarket and going the long way round the car park, and doing it kindly, if there is such a thing as kindly.
The phone stopped inside a fortnight, four years ago. It never started again. What replaced it is a life that works: a job that is fine, a van, a routine, and a Sunday where he arrives four minutes late on purpose and leaves during the last song.
He is not here to be told it was not his fault, and he is not here to be told what it was. He knows what it was. He is not asking anybody to go over it with him. He gave up a long time ago on the idea that there is a conversation somewhere which fixes it.
What he cannot do is sing. Not the big chorus. Not because he does not believe it, but because singing it would be a claim about how he is doing, and he is not doing that, and the very last thing he will do at this point in his life is stand in a room full of people and act.
Last month the man next to him, a kind man who knows none of it, leaned over during that same song and said cheerfully: come on, get involved, He is worthy of it.
And walking out to the van he thought: I know He is. That is not the problem. The problem is that I have nothing true to sing this morning and I will not sing something false in His house.
Maybe that is roughly where you are. Not unwilling. Just unable to say the big sentence, unwilling to fake it, and quietly certain that means you are finished with worship.

Say the word plainly before anybody sings anything
The name on the front of this site sounds like money, so let me settle it before a single thing is offered underneath it.
Abundance here is never money, and on this page it is not a restored name either. It is not the phone starting again, it is not the trade forgetting, and it is not a Sunday in a room where nobody knows anything. The word means fullness of life, which is precisely what John 10 says the Shepherd came to give, and life is the whole of the noun. Not reputation. Life.
That matters more here than almost anywhere, because a man who has lost his name is very easily sold a promise about getting it back, and nobody on this page is selling one.
You have that fullness with four years of this behind you and no change at all in what the county thinks, and it is not being held back until a name is clear. That is not a nice thought, it is the sentence in John 10, and the Holy Spirit carries a written line like that into a man standing near a fire door with his hands at his sides.
A garment is given, never demanded
Here is the verse this site is named out of, and the middle of it is the part that gets missed.
the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spiritIsaiah 61:3
Look at the verb. It is given. A garment of praise is handed to a person who is standing there with a faint spirit, in exchange for nothing, and it is put on them. It is not a uniform anybody is told to turn up wearing. Wherever that verse gets used to tell a heavy man to cheer up and get involved, it has been turned inside out, because God gives the garment, and a man who has none is not being disobedient. He is being described.
You were given that garment, and Isaiah 61 hands it to mourning people rather than issuing it to recovered ones, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts it on somebody who has stood by a fire door for four years unable to lift his voice.
Heavy is allowed in His house
Now, what actually happens if a man says only what is true.
Open the Psalms anywhere. A third of them are complaints. There are lines in there no worship leader would ever put on a screen: I am forgotten like a dead man out of mind, my eye wastes away because of grief, darkness is my closest friend. Those are in the songbook. They were not slipped past an editor. They are the songbook, and they were sung out loud in public by the whole congregation.
So heaviness has never once been evidence of unbelief in God's house. It is evidence of weight, which is a different thing entirely. And the God who put a whole book of honest songs in the middle of the Bible is not standing at the back of a room waiting for a man to get his face right first.
You have not been asked to pretend anything. Not ever, not in that room, not on that Sunday. Scripture never once turned worship into a performance of wellness, and the Holy Spirit does not require a man to be enthusiastic in order to carry four honest words up to the Father.
What four words will hold
So here is what to do with the second song, and it is smaller than anybody expects.
Say something entirely true. Not the big chorus, if the big chorus is not true this morning. Four words, if four words is what stays honest. God, You are good. Jesus, You are here. That is a whole song. It is not a reduced version of worship, it is the actual thing, because worship is truth spoken toward God, there is no minimum length written anywhere in the book, and the Holy Spirit does not measure a sentence by the yard.
And a man who says four true words in a back row is doing something considerably harder than the room around him, most of whom are singing on the strength of a decent week. Nobody will notice. That is fine. It was never for them.
You are received in that back row exactly as things are, with the four years and the car park and none of it resolved, because the word of God says He is near to the broken hearted rather than near to the confident, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying whatever is honest straight up while the rest of the room is on the second verse.
Something can be received in a back row, near a fire door, on a Sunday when the mouth will not open, and none of it requires four years to be dealt with first.
You are welcome in that room, and welcome heavy. Not welcome once the singing improves. God hands out a garment of praise to people with a faint spirit, which stands written in Isaiah 61 in exactly those words, and His Spirit is the one who takes what little a man can honestly say and carries it where it is going.
So open your mouth on the true part. One line. God's people have always found their footing by saying something out loud toward Him, and the shortest honest sentence in that building goes further than the longest one sung out of habit.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the van in the car park if the back row is too public a place for it. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and nothing anybody in a county knows about a man alters where he is seated. What He does with the months ahead is His to decide, and however He answers, these three are true this morning. They rest on what is written in Isaiah 61 rather than on anything I could talk anybody into, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them into a back row on the left, near a fire door.
- Silence in the second song, you are not a report on my faith and you do not get to keep me out of this room, and I am standing here on Sunday whether or not you lift. Scripture calls praise a garment given to people with a faint spirit, and Isaiah 61 hands it over rather than demanding it at the door. In the name of Jesus I open my mouth on what is actually true and I let that be the whole song.
- Fear that I am only what they heard, you are named and you do not get to choose my words this morning. The word of God says the Lord looks on the heart and not on what a county repeats about a man, and He said so long before anybody in this building was born. What He sees is what stands, and I am singing four true words on it.
- God, You receive what is true from me and You have never once asked me to pretend inside Your house. You know the four years and You know the long way round the car park, and You have not crossed to the other side of anything. Take the little I can honestly say this morning, and Your Spirit is the one carrying it up while I stand here by the fire door.
