Something Grows HereMark 4:27

Twenty Minutes After the Shift

This message is for eighteen months after the workshop went, standing in somebody else's plant room with a lad who keeps asking you how things work, and not knowing whether that counts as anything

He still drives past the unit. Not on purpose. It is on the way to the tip and there is no other road, and there is a different name on the roller door now, in a different color, done properly by a signwriter rather than by his brother with a brush and a spirit level on a Sunday.

Eleven years, that workshop. Two lathes, a pillar drill he bought at an auction in the rain, a kettle that had to be held at an angle. It went, and the partnership went with it, and eighteen months later he does maintenance shifts at a leisure center: filters, pumps, a boiler with a personality, a plant room that smells of chlorine and warm dust.

Everybody has a verse for him. He has had beauty for ashes four times, twice by text. A man at church told him, with great warmth and complete confidence, that God restores double, and that he should get ready because it is coming. He said thank you. He drove home. And somewhere on the ring road he said out loud, to nobody, that he did not think that was true, and then felt sick about having said it.

Here is what he has not told anyone. There is a lad at the center, nineteen, on the desk, who has started coming down to the plant room at the end of a shift with a flask and asking how things work. Why the pump does that. What the noise means. And he has started staying twenty minutes late to show him.

You have ground like this. Something is gone, and it is not coming back in the shape it was, and people who love you keep describing a future you cannot make yourself believe in.

Twenty Minutes After the Shift

Say what the word actually means before anything is offered under it

The word abundance has been ruined by people using it to mean money, and that ruin has to be cleared before a single thing can be said to a man in a plant room.

Jesus said He came so that people would have life, and have it to the full. That is the sentence the word comes from, and it is about life: being alive rather than merely continuing, having something in you again, being present in a room, wanting things, laughing without checking whether you are allowed to. It is not a house, it is not a business, it is not a figure of any kind, and anybody who tells you that fullness of life means your circumstances are about to improve has swapped the word for a different one and hoped you would not notice.

So nothing in what follows is a forecast about your unit, your marriage, your name in the trade or your body. Nobody here knows. What is being said is smaller and much more solid: God gives life by His Spirit, and He is not waiting for your ground to look presentable before He puts anything in it.

Now the pit, before anything else, because it deserves saying properly. Eleven years is eleven years. A signwriter's name in a different color on a door you painted yourself is a thing that goes in like a splinter every single time you drive to the tip. And being told that God restores double, by somebody who means it kindly, is one of the loneliest sentences there is when you are standing in the actual ashes, because it asks you to be excited about a future while you are still holding the smell of the past.

You are not faithless for finding that unbearable, and God is not offended by a man who says out loud on a ring road that he does not think it is true. The written word carries whole chapters of people saying exactly that to God's face, and His Spirit is not the one who put the promise of double on your text messages. He can be told the truth. He always could.

The seed comes up while the man is asleep

There is a parable of Jesus that almost nobody preaches, and it is four sentences long.

The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.Mark 4:26-27

He knows not how. That is the middle of the story and it is the whole of the story. The man is not making it happen. He is not present for the mechanism. He goes to bed, gets up, does his week, and underneath the surface a thing he did not design is putting out a root.

Which means the growing is not evidence of how well you are recovering. It is not a reward for your attitude, and it is not on hold pending your recovery. It goes on in the dark, in ground that looks like nothing, while a man sleeps badly in a rented flat and drives past a roller door with somebody else's name on it.

You have life coming up in you that you did not plant and cannot account for, and it is coming up now rather than after you have got yourself right. Scripture puts the growing in the ground and not in the farmer's competence, and the Spirit of God is the one who works underneath a life while the person living it can see nothing at all. You are not being graded on how you look eighteen months in.

It will not match, and that is not a defect

Now the hard part, said plainly, because a soft version of it would be no use to anybody.

What comes up will not be a copy of what went. It never is. The parable does not say the man gets his seed back. Seed does not come back. It goes into the ground and stops being seed, and what stands up in that field is a different thing entirely with a different shape and a different use.

So a lad with a flask asking about a pump is not a smaller version of a workshop. It is not compensation, it is not a consolation prize, and it is certainly not the reason the workshop went. It is a different living thing, in the same man, in ground that has been through a fire.

And here is why the twenty minutes matter. He is not being paid for them. Nobody asked him. He stays because something in him still wants to teach a young lad how a thing works, and that wanting did not die in the fire, and eighteen months ago he would have told you it had.

You are alive in a way you have not credited yourself with, and the proof is not your circumstances, it is what still moves in you when nobody is paying you for it. Scripture says the life God gives is full life rather than restored property, and the Holy Spirit keeps a thing alive in a person when everything around it has gone. Nothing about that has to match what you lost in order to be real.

The breakthrough

So this is the hour, and it is not about believing something is coming.

Jesus said the smallest possible faith, spoken to the mountain, is enough, and the smallness is the mercy in it. You do not have to work up conviction about a future you cannot picture. You do not have to agree with the man at church. What you have to do is open your mouth about something that is already true, which is a much shorter distance than anybody has been asking you to travel.

The mountain here is a rule you have been living under without ever agreeing to it: that nothing counts unless it is the same shape as the thing that burned.

You are standing in ground that God is already working, and the working started before you were able to notice or approve of it. The written word says the seed grows while the man sleeps and knows not how, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in the dark under a life. Name what is up. That is all that is being asked tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say these sitting down, out loud, in the actual room you are in. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the ground to speak over your own life has been given to you and it does not depend on how the last eighteen months went. Jesus said that whoever says to the mountain, be lifted up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, shall have what he says, and He measured the seed and not the season. Scripture puts the growing in the ground rather than in the farmer, and the Holy Spirit is the one working underneath a life that looks like nothing from above. What He does with the rest of it, and whether anything is ever rebuilt, is His to decide and is not being promised to you here.

  1. Ground where the workshop stood, you are not going back to what you were and I have stopped demanding it. Scripture says the seed comes up while the man sleeps and he knows not how, and in the name of Jesus I am looking at what is actually growing rather than at the outline of what is gone.
  2. Fear that nothing counts unless it matches, you do not get to name what is alive in me. The written word says God gives life and gives it full, and I am calling twenty minutes in a plant room exactly what it is.
  3. Lord, You are growing something in ground I would never have chosen, and You have not once asked me to be glad about the ground. I thank You, because Your Spirit works in the dark where I cannot see the mechanism, and tonight I am naming one living thing out loud instead of counting the ashes again.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
