Oil Of JoyIsaiah 61:3

The Clothes She Wore For Her Hands

This message is for to receive gladness as something given, ten weeks after her hands stopped being reliable, standing at a wardrobe of nine plain dark tops she only ever bought so that her signing could be read

There are nine of them on the rail and every single one is plain and dark.

She is putting laundry away on a Thursday and she has one over her arm, the navy with the boat neck, and she has stopped in front of the wardrobe because she has just properly seen what is hanging there. Nine tops. Navy, black, charcoal, a deep green. No pattern on any of them. Nothing at the cuff. Nothing at the neck to catch an eye.

She bought every one of them for the same reason and it was never fashion. Plain and dark behind hands, so that the hands read. Ten years of buying clothes for what was in front of them rather than for herself, and she never once thought of it as a sacrifice, because it was not one. It was the job. It was the best job.

Ten weeks.

Her shoulder and her wrists. The words for it are long and she can say them now without the sheet of paper. What it comes to is that she can do about twenty minutes of anything and then her hands stop being reliable, and reliable was the whole thing. Not fast. Reliable. A room full of people trusting that what was in the air arrived in their hands correctly.

The lanyard is in the drawer under the socks, which is a stupid place for it, and she knows exactly why it is there.

Ten weeks is when the messages have gone. The first fortnight was lovely. Everyone was lovely. And then the work carried on, because it has to, because there are people in rooms who need somebody, and other hands went into those rooms, and that is right, and she is glad, and both of those things are true at the same time and she is tired of holding them.

Her sister said it kindly, wanting to help, getting it wrong the way people who love you do: at least you can still talk, love.

She said yes. She said thanks. She did not say the other thing, which is that talking was never what she did.

And she stands in front of nine dark tops with the navy one over her arm and thinks the thing she has not said to anybody, which is: I have started to wonder whether I am ever going to feel anything good again. Not sad. Not angry. Just flat, all the way down, for ten weeks, and beginning to think that the flat is the new floor.

Maybe that is where you are. In front of a cupboard with the kit still in it, holding something you cannot use, ten weeks or ten months into a body that does not do what it did, and starting to suspect that gladness is a thing other people have.

The Clothes She Wore For Her Hands

The word, and the thing this article will not do

Abundance is not money and it is not a body that works. On this site the word means fullness of life, which is John 10 verse 10, where Jesus said He came so that people would have life and have it abundantly. The noun is life. And I am not going to use the word fullness as a polite way of stepping over the thing that was actually lost, because your hands were not a detail and they were not a hobby.

So here is what is true at a wardrobe on a Thursday. You are welcome to gladness no matter how long this has taken. Isaiah 61 says the oil of joy is given to those who mourn, which is a description of who they are and not a stage they have finished, and the Holy Spirit pours rather than the one who assesses whether ten weeks is too long to still be flat.

Look at who the verse hands it to. Mourners. Not former mourners. Not people who have processed it beautifully and come out the other side with something quotable. The oil goes onto the head of somebody who is in the middle of it, which is the only place a person in the middle of it needs it to go.

And you were never asked to manufacture any of it. That is the whole grammar of the verse: oil is poured onto somebody by somebody else, and Scripture keeps the pouring in God's hands rather than putting it in yours. The Holy Spirit is the one who does it, which means the flatness of the last ten weeks was never a failure of yours to fix.

Gladness is not a swap

There is a version of this teaching that I want to name and then refuse. It goes like this: God gives joy, so the joy is what a person has instead of the thing they lost. That is a swap. It is a lie, and it turns God into somebody who quietly takes a woman's work off her and puts a feeling in her hands in its place, and I will not put that sentence anywhere near you.

You have not been offered a trade. Nothing on this page is a replacement for what your hands did and I would not insult you with one. What Isaiah 61 describes is oil poured onto a mourner who is still mourning, and it is the Holy Spirit who can hold both of those in a person at once when nobody else around them can manage it for five minutes.

Both at once is the thing the people near you cannot do, which is why the kind sentences land wrong. Your sister needs you to be one thing so that she knows what to say to it. At least you can still talk is a person reaching for a version of you that is easier to stand next to, and she is not a villain for it, and it still lands like a slap.

You are allowed to be two things in the same afternoon. Scripture is full of it, and one man wrote his own life down as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, in a letter that got kept, and nobody in the centuries since has managed to tidy that into one feeling. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a lived condition rather than a contradiction waiting to be sorted out.

Receiving is a different action

So the move today is not reaching. Reaching is what a person does for a thing they have to go and get, and it is exhausting, and it puts the whole weight of the business back onto the one who has the least to give this week.

You have open hands available even now, and I am aware of exactly what I am saying to a woman whose hands are the loss. Open is not a grip and it costs nothing to hold. Scripture puts the oil in God's hand and the mourner underneath it, and His Spirit is the one who pours in His own time and has never once announced a schedule to anybody.

And nothing here promises that the feeling arrives tonight. I am not going to do that to you, because there have been enough sentences already that were written to make the speaker comfortable. What is being said is who holds the oil, and who it is for, and that both of those were settled long before Thursday.

The breakthrough

Something can be received here, in front of a wardrobe, with a navy top over your arm.

You have not been left out of the pouring. Isaiah 61 puts the oil of joy in God's hands and mourners underneath it, and there is no clause about how long it has been, and no clause about doing the mourning gracefully. The Holy Spirit is the one who pours, and He has never once needed a person to feel ready first.

So open your hands, and then say something out loud. Receiving is a posture before it is ever a feeling, and the people of God have always taken the posture first and left Him to do what He does with it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and a body that changed has never altered where a person is seated. What happens to your hands, to the nine tops on the rail and to the months ahead is His to decide, and however He answers over any of it, these three lines are true tonight. They rest on what is written in Isaiah 61 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them into a woman who has been flat for ten weeks.

  1. Nine dark tops on the rail, you are clothes I bought for a job and you are not the size of what is left of me. Isaiah says the oil of joy is given to people who are mourning, and God never put a time limit on the mourning. In the name of Jesus I leave you hanging there, and I open my hands for what He is actually pouring.
  2. Thought that flat is my new floor, you do not get to name what I am, and you have no claim on a woman God is holding oil over. Scripture has a man calling himself sorrowful and always rejoicing in the same breath, and God kept that sentence in the letter. Gladness is His to pour and I am underneath it tonight, with my hands open on my knees.
  3. Father, You pour the oil of joy onto people who are mourning and Isaiah 61 says so plainly, and You never made the timing of it my responsibility. You know the lanyard under the socks and You know what ten weeks of flat is like, and You have not stepped back from me while it lasted. Pour what You have for me here by Your Spirit, and my hands are open for the whole song.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
