Something Grows HereMark 4:27

The Cases Are Still By The Wall

This message is for to notice one small living thing three months after coming home with two suitcases, standing at four in the afternoon in a niece's old bedroom with a language nobody on this street needs

The cases are against the wall under the window and they have been there since March, and he has not unpacked them, because unpacking them would mean something.

The room was his niece's. Her school things are still in the wardrobe, a hockey stick and a folder with stickers down the spine, and there is a strip of pale paint where a poster came off. His aunt says stay as long as you like, and she means it entirely, and that is somehow not the same as it being his room.

Three months. Eighteen years the other way.

He had a flat with a balcony that got the sun until about two. He had a bakery he went to where the woman knew what he wanted and started it before he reached the counter. He could argue in that language. That is the thing he keeps circling, that he could argue in it properly, with the long clauses, and here on this street that ability is worth precisely nothing. It is not a skill. It is a fact about a man that will never come up again.

His phone still has the other city on the weather screen. He has not deleted it and he cannot say why.

At four he makes coffee the way he learned to make it over there, in the little pot with the long handle, because that is the one thing he brought back that still works here.

People at his aunt's church have been very good about it. Somebody said God restores the years the locusts ate, and that he would get all of it back. He said thanks. And he walked home and thought: I do not want all of it back. I want a Tuesday. I want a Tuesday where I know what I am doing at four o'clock and somebody knows my name in a shop.

Maybe that is where you are. Everybody keeps promising you the whole thing returned, you have stopped believing it, and you cannot say so out loud without sounding faithless.

The Cases Are Still By The Wall

The word on the sign, and what it is not

I want to take the word on the front of this site and turn it over before anything else, because a man who has just been promised everything back does not need another large word thrown at him.

Abundance does not mean a restored life. In John 10 the Shepherd says He came so that His own would have life, and have it to the full, and the noun is life, plain and unglamorous. It is not the flat with the balcony handed back in better condition. It is fullness of life, and that can begin in a niece's old bedroom with a hockey stick in the wardrobe.

You have life in the room you are actually standing in, and that is not me making the best of things. It is written in John 10 in the Shepherd's own words, and the Holy Spirit carries a line like that into a man who has stopped expecting anything at four in the afternoon.

None of which unpacks a case or gives you back eighteen years, and I am not going to slide past that on my way somewhere brighter.

Nobody who says that to you actually knows

Let me say the thing that cannot be said out loud in a church porch without sounding faithless. The people telling you it all comes back do not know that. The warmth of a sentence does not turn it into information, and a promise God did not make is not made safer by being said kindly.

What Isaiah 61 actually says is that the ones who mourn are given oaks of righteousness, planted, the planting of the Lord. Read it slowly. An oak is not the tree that burnt. It is not a copy, it is not compensation, and it does not stand where the old one stood by way of apology. It is a new tree in ground that has been through a fire, and Isaiah does not describe it, does not date it and does not tell the mourner what it looks like.

You are standing in ground where God grows things, and that is not a forecast, it is a description of what He is like. Mark 4 has the seed coming up while the man sleeps and rises night and day and does not know how, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in soil nobody is watching, including the soil of a man three months home with nothing to report.

Notice what that parable in Mark refuses to do. It does not tell the man what the crop is. It does not tell him when. It tells him that growth is happening in a way that is not his to manage and not his to see, and it lets that be the comfort instead of handing him a description.

There is a mercy in that refusal which is easy to miss. A description of a future would have to be either accurate or kind, and those two are not always the same thing, so the parable gives neither. It gives the ground, the seed, the sleeping man and the God who is not asleep, and it leaves a person with something he can actually stand on at four in the afternoon.

You have not been left in a room to compost. The word says the earth brings forth of itself, first the blade, then the ear, and it says so without asking the farmer to supervise any of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who does in a person what the ground does in the dark.

Small, and already here

The trouble with a word like growth is that we hear it and immediately picture the harvest, because that is what growth looks like in a photograph. Growth in real life looks like the blade. It is embarrassingly small. It is four o'clock and the little pot with the long handle, and an aunt who has started coming through at four because she likes the smell of it, and a conversation about nothing that happens every day now and did not happen in March.

You have been given eyes that can see a blade, and that is not a small thing in a life that has lost its scale. The word says the ground brings forth first the blade and treats it as the beginning of the harvest rather than a poor imitation of one, and His Spirit is the one who shows a man what is already growing in a room he still calls temporary.

That is not a consolation prize handed over because the real thing is unavailable. That is the blade.

You are already inside something living, and it does not have to match what went before in order to be real. That is what Isaiah says about oaks planted in burnt ground rather than trees restored to an old shape, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing it in a life that currently has two cases against the wall.

I am not going to tell you what it grows into. Isaiah did not, the man in Mark 4 did not know either, and any page that hands you a picture of next year has stopped quoting the Bible and started guessing.

The breakthrough

Something can be received in a room with two cases against the wall and nothing at all resolved.

You are not waiting outside the good thing until your life looks recognizable again. Isaiah 61 puts the oaks in the hands of the Lord who plants them rather than in the hands of the mourner who has to raise them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line grow inside a person with nothing to show for three months.

So say it out loud. One small living thing already in your life, however unimpressive it sounds in your own voice. Naming it is not pretending it is bigger than it is. It is the ordinary business of putting the mouth on what God has already said, and God's people have always found their footing that way.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your mouth. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and coming home with two cases did not change where a person is seated. What grows, and whether it ever grows into anything you would recognize, is His to decide, and however He answers that, these three are true this evening. They stand on what is written in Isaiah 61 and Mark 4 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes them land in a borrowed bedroom.

  1. Cases against the wall, you are two bags of clothes and you are not the measure of a life, and I am unzipping one of you this evening. Scripture says the Lord plants oaks in ground that has been through a fire, and He never once promised me a copy of the old tree. In the name of Jesus I stop waiting for my life to look familiar before I live in it.
  2. Idea that nothing I carry is any use here, you are dismissed, and you do not get the four o'clock hour any longer. The word says the ground brings forth of itself while the man sleeps, and it does not ask the man to be impressive first. God is growing something in me on this street, and I am naming the small green thing out loud today.
  3. Lord, You plant oaks in burnt ground and You said so in Isaiah 61 without once describing what they look like. You know the cases under the window, and the language nobody on this street needs, and the little pot at four o'clock. Grow what You are growing in me, in the name of Jesus, and I am naming the one living thing I can see today and leaving the rest with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
