He has been sitting in the supermarket car park with the engine off for eleven minutes and he has not gone in.
It is twenty past nine on a Tuesday. For twenty two years, at twenty past nine on a Tuesday, he was standing in front of a room with thirty people in it and a marker pen going dry in his hand. His body still knows the time. That is the strange part nobody warns you about. The diary went years ago and the body kept the timetable.
The lanyard is still in the door pocket. He does not know why. It has been there since the week of the hearing and it slides forward every time he brakes.
The hearing was in a room with a long table and a jug of water on it and three people behind the table who were polite the whole way through. There were folders. His name was on the front of the folder in a font somebody had chosen. Fourteen months ago now.
Fourteen months. The union rep stopped ringing after the appeal closed. Two colleagues texted for a while, and one of them still does at Christmas, and he is grateful for that and he does not say so. His wife has stopped asking how he is because she knows what the answer is and asking makes him say it out loud. The house has adjusted around him the way a family adjusts around a piece of furniture that will not move.
He still wakes at ten past six.
At the school gate end of the road there is a woman he used to work with and he has learned the timings well enough to miss her. That is a thing he has become, a man who knows the timings.
Last month someone from church said, with real warmth, God has got something bigger for you than that place ever was. He said thanks. He thought about it for a fortnight. It sat in him like a swallowed stone, because it was kind, and because it wanted him to be somewhere he is not, and because it quietly needed twenty two years to have been a smaller thing than it was.
So he sits in the car at twenty past nine and the trolleys go past the bonnet and he does not go in yet.
Maybe that is where you are. Long past the crisis. Long past the part where people ask. Sitting somewhere ordinary at the exact hour you used to be somewhere, with a life that is simply not there any more.

The word on the sign, before anything else
Let me deal with the word first, because it is written over this whole site and it will sit in the way if I leave it there.
Abundance is not a second career. It is not the registration back, not the letter reversed, not a bigger room and a better title further along. And it is not money, which is the reading most people arrive at this address carrying. Abundance is fullness of life, spoken by the Shepherd who said He came so that His own would have life and have it to the full.
You have that fullness now, fourteen months in, with an empty calendar and nowhere to be at twenty past nine. That is not my encouragement dressed up. It is written in John 10 in His own words, and the Holy Spirit carries a sentence like that through a windscreen into a parked car.
I say it early so that nothing after it is being sold to you.
Nobody is moving you on from this
Here is what I actually came to say, and it is smaller than a plan.
Fourteen months in, what people mostly offer is a way out of the hour. A retraining course. A verse with a hinge in the middle of it. A sentence that begins with the words at least. All of it kindly meant, all of it pointing away from the car park, and all of it landing like a request.
I am not doing that. Nothing on this page lifts anybody out of the place they are sitting, because that is not what ashes need and it is not what God does when He comes into them.
You are met here. Not further along. Not after some version of yourself that has recovered. Here, with the engine off and the trolleys going past. Scripture says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, and there is no inspection attached to either half of that sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that nearness into an actual vehicle on an actual Tuesday.
He is near to the broken hearted, and He did not ask how it broke
Read that verse slowly, because everything on this page hangs off it.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18
Near. Not on His way. Not near to the ones whose collapse came from outside them, or near to the ones who can prove they were treated unfairly, or near to the ones who have completed something. Near to the broken hearted. The condition named is the breaking, and the breaking is the only qualification in the sentence.
I do not know what happened in that room and I am not going to go looking. I will not lay out your part in it and I will not tell you that you had no part. Mercy that needs an audit first is not mercy, it is a settlement, and God has never once run His kindness that way.
You were loved through the whole of the worst month of that year, on the days you would rather not think about and the days you cannot stop thinking about. His word says He is near to the crushed in spirit with no clause about how the crushing came, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land in a man who has read his own name on a folder.
What being held actually is
Being held is not being lifted.
I want to be exact, because this is where these pages usually cheat. Held does not mean carried off somewhere better. It does not mean the hour stops arriving at twenty past nine. It means somebody is in the car. It means the silence has company in it. It means that when the body remembers the timetable, there is Someone remembering it alongside you and not flinching from what it costs.
You have that, and it is not a feeling you are being asked to produce. Scripture puts God nearest at the point of the break rather than at the point of the recovery, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes nearness something a person can actually stand in rather than a doctrine they agree with.
Nothing about the hearing is undone by that. The lanyard is still in the door pocket. I am not going to reach for a bright ending, because a bright ending here would be a lie and it would be smelled a mile off, and there have been enough people needing this man to be further along than he is.
Something can be received right here, in the car, at twenty past nine, with nothing at all resolved.
You are held in this exact hour. Not held on the condition that you improve, not held once the shame has settled down, not held from a polite distance. Held. It is written in Psalm 34 that the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and the Holy Spirit brings a written nearness into a real Tuesday morning.
Nothing is being asked of you and no one is rushing you anywhere. So open your mouth and say something true. Not something better. God's people have always found their footing by saying out loud what is actually so, and He has never once needed it tidied up before He would come near it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your mouth, sitting where you are. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and a panel has no jurisdiction over where a person is seated. What happens with the months ahead belongs to Him, and however He answers over any of it, these three are true this morning. They rest on what is written in Psalm 34 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and His Spirit is the one who carries them into a parked car.
- Room with the table in it, you are finished with me and you do not get to name me. Scripture says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves the crushed in spirit, and no panel has authority over where God chooses to stand. In the name of Jesus I stop reporting to that room and I sit down where I actually am.
- Voice that says I cannot be trusted now, you are dismissed and you do not get the rest of my Tuesdays. God's mercy in Scripture was never issued against a clean record, and His Spirit carries that nearness to the crushed with no clause underneath about how the crushing came. I am held in this exact hour, and the holding did not wait for me to be further along.
- Lord, You are near to the broken hearted and You said it without a single condition attached to it. You are here at twenty past nine in a car park with the trolleys going past, and You are not looking at Your watch. Sit with me in this hour, and I am staying where I am while You do.
